TotalCon '09
The short version here is, I went to TotalCon this year to run demos of MvM and Collision, ended up scratching the latter because it was up against a Car Wars tourney and heck, even I'd make that a higher priority if I weren't obligated to man the demo table. Collision is fun, but Car Wars is Car Wars after all. Plus there's a lot of overlap in the appeal. In any case, I had a good time, it was a good crowd, and next year I'm hoping to make a better commitment to it.
The Massive Vs. The Masses went over great with those who had a chance to play it, as it always does. Not to toot my own horn here, but I'm constantly amazed at how positive a response it seems to get from, literally, every single person who plays it. Not to mention the fact that I can sit there for an entire day explaining the rules to people and playing it 20 or so times in a row and still have a great time doing so.
Collision, while I never did get a full game organized, got a lot of interest. If the con had had less of a solid, tight-packed schedule it most likely would have gotten a fair deal of play (not that I'm complaining on that point). On the upside, seeing a game of Empire Builder being played in the corner got me onto a line of thinking that could potentially lead to getting the sucker out the door much much quicker and with a lower price than I thought possible.
Had a chance to play a fair number of other games during the off-hours, some quite interesting and deserving of a quick plug, but most of which I can't for the life of me remember the names of. The exception being Chaos Isle: Zombi Deck, which I played a quick demo of to kill time between events, and found it to be enough of a pleasant surprise to pick it up. It's of the increasingly common pull monsters off a deck, kill'em, loot'em, repeat mini-genre of non-collectable card games, but with spiteful backstabbing toned way down, and a bit more strategy involved.
While not something that happened at the con, this next bit was recent and relevant enough to still bear mention here. As you are hopefully aware, we here at WDLLC have a little joke of an RPG available as a PDF called Glistening Chests. Now, when I refer to this as a joke, I mean it was written more with the intent of being a humorous set of rules to read through, and if it actually doubled as a fun game, that's just a bonus. That being said, prior to its official release, the rules got some basic testing for workability's sake, but I never actually had a chance to sit a group of players down and honestly try to properly play a session for just the sake of fun.
About a month back though, someone was planning a visit from out of town, feeling a bit adventurous, and asked if I'd run a one-shot of it. As it turns out, it's a surprisingly fun game. It's still a horrible game mind you, in the sense that it is intentionally an over-the-top sexist B-movie barbarian cheese themed game (to the extent that The Eye of Argon could very easily be adapted into a module for it), but if you're in the proper mindset you can really have a blast with it. The practical upshot here is that I am going to be working it into my default con demo bundle in the future.
